Eligibility Requirements

Undergraduate students

To be eligible to participate in the Melbourne Global Mobility Exchange Program at an undergraduate level, you must:

  • be enrolled at the University of Melbourne as a local or international student;
  • have completed, or be about to complete, at least one year of study and 75 points at the University of Melbourne by the due date of applications;
  • have achieved a weighted average of at least 70% (H2B) across the degree for which you are seeking credit while on exchange;
  • be able to study the equivalent of at least a full-time load while overseas (see choosing your subjects);
  • obtain faculty approval on a Melbourne Global Mobility application;
  • demonstrate through a financial plan your ability to support your stay overseas;
  • satisfy host institution and host country entry requirements; and
  • be a 'good ambassador' for the University of Melbourne.

Note:
Students in the Faculty of Arts should check the Faculty website about specific eligibility requirements for receiving credit for language study on Exchange.

Combined degree students

Combined degree students may study subjects from either or both degrees while on exchange. If you study subjects from both degrees, you are required to get approval from both faculties on the Melbourne Global Mobility application form. If you study subjects from only one degree you are required to get faculty approval from the relevant faculty only.

Honours students

Students undertaking an honours year are normally only allowed to go on exchange for one semester and 37.5 points of coursework study. Different departments/faculties, however, may have different requirements and you should consult your Faculty advisor for more information.

Note:
Students in the Faculty of Arts should check the Faculty website about specific eligibility requirements for going on Exchange in honours.

Transferring students

Students who have transferred from another tertiary institution after at least a year of study at that institution, and who have been granted credit at the University of Melbourne, only be required to complete a minimum of one semester and 50 points at the University of Melbourne, before being eligible to apply for a place on the exchange program. All other undergraduate eligibility requirements apply.

Graduate students

Coursework: Graduate, postgraduate diploma and masters-by-coursework students are usually eligible to participate in the Melbourne Global Mobility Program, but should confirm their eligibility with the convenor of their course. If there are no course restrictions, to be eligible for the exchange program you must:

  • be enrolled at the University of Melbourne as a local or international student;
  • have completed at least one semester and 37.5 points, in the University of Melbourne course for which they are seeking credit for the study undertaken overseas, by the due date of applications;
  • have achieved a weighted average of at least 70% (H2B) across the degree for which you are seeking credit while on exchange;
  • be able to study the equivalent of at least a full-time load while overseas (see choosing your subjects);
  • obtain faculty approval on a Melbourne Global Mobility application;
  • demonstrate through a financial plan your ability to support your stay overseas;
  • satisfy host institution and host country entry requirements; and
  • be a 'good ambassador' for the University of Melbourne.

Research:
Masters-by-research and PhD students are usually eligible to participate in Melbourne Global Mobility exchange agreements. As a research student you should make individual arrangements with your supervisors and Melbourne Global Mobility. To be accepted by Melbourne Global Mobility, research students will have to provide, in place of one of the academic references required by the Melbourne Global Mobility application, a statement of support for their principal supervisor which addresses:

  • the student's academic merit;
  • the value of the exchange to the research project;
  • details of any subjects to be undertaken overseas, if they are for credit and their relevance to the research;
  • details of any temporary supervision that has been arranged; and
  • if the student can still complete their thesis within the original time frame.

Research students should also apply for 'Leave to Study Away' through the School of Graduate Research.
