Booking your flight ...
Our usual advice to students is that if you feel you need to purchase a flight then you should try to get a ticket that will allow you change your departure date without a financial penalty in case you might need to before you leave. Ideally, however, you should not purchase your flight until you have received an official acceptance letter from your host university.
We understand that flights fill up fast but it is out of our control when we will receive your acceptance letter from your host university.
STA Travel at the University of Melbourne understands the situation for our Exchange students. They will happily book your flight early and you pay a deposit of $250. If, however, you need to cancel your exchange for a good reason (for example, you weren't accepted by the host institution or there was an illness in the family etc) they will fully refund your deposit. If you wish to purchase your flight before receiving your official acceptance, we recommend that you organise your travel through STA Travel at the University of Melbourne (Union House).

Get a refund for some of your travel on exchange ...
STA Travel have generously agreed to offer a travel bursary for a Melbourne Global Mobility exchange student. The recipient will be drawn at the end of each year before Christmas from students who have purchased their travel for exchange at the STA Travel shop at the University of Melbourne in Union House in that year.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the STA Travel bursary you must book and pay a minimum $250 deposit* for your travel at STA Travel, Melbourne University branch, by 5pm on the Friday before Christmas. For example, an exchange student booking travel in January 2009 for travel in semester 2, 2009 will be considered in the draw at Christmas 2009.
When you book make sure that you tell the STA staff you are an exchange student with Melbourne Global Mobility.
The prize
The prize will be a refund to the value of a direct return economy airfare from Melbourne to the international airport nearest to the partner institution of the winning student.
The draw will take place in the fortnight preceeding Christmas and be supervised by a representative of Melbourne Global Mobility. STA Travel will notify the winning student in the following week.
The recipient must depart Australia on an authorised Melbourne Global Mobility exchange before 30 April, in the following year or the bursary will be reallocated to another student. The bursary can not be deferred.
