Melbourne Global Scholarships

A Melbourne Global Scholarship for exchange students provides a one-off payment of $2,500. It is designed to assist students meet basic travel costs and is awarded on the basis of academic merit. Faculty quotas may apply and funding is subject to availability.

Undergraduate students, including honours students, are automatically considered for a Melbourne Global Scholarship. No separate application is necessary. To be eligible, students must have:

  • submitted an exchange application form by the appropriate deadline date and been approved to go on exchange by their faculty(s);
  • an overall weighted average of at least 70%; and
  • completed, or be about to complete, at least 75 points and at least one year of study at the University of Melbourne at the time of application.

Graduate coursework students are eligible to receive a Melbourne Global Scholarship and will be considered automatically, under the same eligibility conditions as undergraduate students, with the following exception:

  • graduate coursework students must have completed at least 37.5 points and a semester of study at the University of Melbourne in the degree or diploma for which they are seeking credit on exchange at the time of application.

Graduate research students are not eligible to receive a Melbourne Global Scholarship and should instead investigate travel funding options through the Melbourne Scholarships Office.


Students who have received a Melbourne Global Scholarship (formerly Melbourne Abroad Scholarships), including a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study, see below, in the past are not eligible to receive another Melbourne Global Scholarship or Melbourne Global Financial Assistance.

If you were awarded a Melbourne Global Scholarship in a previous round and deferred your exchange, you will be reconsidered under the guidelines of the new round in which you will travel.

It is expected that emails announcing the awarding of the scholarships (whether students have been successful or unsuccessful) will be sent:

  • Round 1, by late May
  • Round 2, by early October

Note: Funds are not guaranteed and are distributed on the basis of academic merit.

Melbourne Global Financial Assistance

All undergraduate students, including honours students, and graduate coursework students may also apply for Melbourne Global Financial Assistance, which provides a grant of an amount determined on the basis of financial need. Such grants will not normally exceed $2,000 in value.

This assistance is awarded on the basis of financial need, where the receipt of benefits, scholarships, destination, length of study and parental assistance are all taken into consideration. Financial Assistance applications are available from the link below and are processed after the Melbourne Global Scholarship awards have been made.

Applications are due by the following dates:

Round 1 - for travel on or after 1 May and before 1 November apply by 20 May*

Round 2 - for travel on or after 1 November and before 1 May of the following year apply by 20 October*

* Where the date falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted on the following Monday. Late applications cannot be accepted.


It is expected that emails announcing the awarding of the funding will be sent:

  • Round 1, by mid-June
  • Round 2, by mid-November

Melbourne Global Scholarships in Language Study

Students currently enrolled in a modern language subject as part of their undergraduate degree or diploma may be eligible for a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study. The amount awarded usually ranges from $1,000 to $6,000. To be eligible, students must:

  • have completed a full year of language study at tertiary level in the language they intend to study overseas
  • be currently enrolled in modern language studies
  • be intending to undertake study in this language overseas.

Students wishing to apply for a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study should collect an application form from Student Centres or download it by clicking this link:

The completed application must be submitted to the Student Centre of the applicant by the following dates:

Round 1 - for travel on or after 1 May and before 1 November apply by 31 March*

Round 2 - for travel on or after 1 November and before 1 May in the following year apply by 31 August*

* Where the date falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted on the following Monday. Late applications cannot be accepted.

Exchange students who are unsuccessful in obtaining a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study will be automatically considered for a Melbourne Global Scholarship. Students who do receive the Language Study Scholarship will be ineligible for a Melbourne Global Scholarship.

Universitas 21 Funding

The University is providing additional funding for students wishing to study on exchange at institutions which are members of Universitas 21 (U21), in semester 2, 2009 and semester 1, 2010. Students applying to a U21 institution are automatically considered for the funding. No separate application is necessary. If you are accepted by a U21 institution for an exchange you may be eligible to receive the following bonus:

This funding is in addition to any Melbourne Global funding that you may receive. Where more applications are received than funding is available, the bonuses will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

Faculty Funding for Exchange

Faculty funding is usually tied to acceptance at particular exchange destinations. The following faculties provide general one-off payments to exchange students to specified faculty partners:

Special Exchange Funding

Melbourne Global Mobility is offering up to five scholarships of $2,000 each to students who are accepted by any of the following exchange partner institutions for an exchange in semesters 1 and 2, 2009 or semester 1, 2010:
