Melbourne Global Scholarships

A Melbourne Global Scholarship for Study Abroad students provides a one-off payment to assist students in meeting basic travel costs. It is awarded on the basis of academic merit and faculty quotas may apply. The amounts, up to $2,500, vary according to length of stay overseas.

Undergraduate students, including honours students, must have:

  • completed, or be about to complete, at least 75 points and at least one year of study at the University of Melbourne at the time of application;
  • their study program approved for credit or to meet a hurdle requirement, towards their University of Melbourne degree, by their faculty(s); and
  • an overall weighted average of at least 70%.

Postgraduate coursework students are eligible to receive the Melbourne Global Scholarship and will be considered under the same eligibility criteria as undergraduate students, with the following exception:

  • postgraduate coursework students must have completed at least 37.5 points and a semester of study at the University of Melbourne in the degree or diploma for which they are seeking credit on exchange at the time of application.

Postgraduate research students are not eligible to receive the Melbourne Global Scholarship and should instead investigate travel funding options through the Graduate Research Scholarships webpage.


Students who have received a Melbourne Global Scholarship (formerly a Melbourne Abroad Scholarship), including a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study, see below, in the past are not eligible to receive another Melbourne Global Scholarship.

If you were awarded a Melbourne Global Mobility Scholarship in a previous round and deferred your study abroad, you must apply again for a scholarship in the new round in which you will travel.

How to apply
Students should submit their scholarship applications by the following dates:

Round 1 - for travel on or after 1 May and before 1 November apply by 31 March*

Round 2 - for travel on or after 1 November and before 1 May in the following year apply by 31 August*

* Where the date falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted on the following Monday. Late applications cannot be accepted.


Study Abroad students wishing to apply for a Melbourne Global Scholarship should collect an application form from Student Centres or download the documents by clicking this link:

It is expected that emails announcing the awarding of the scholarships (whether students have been successful or unsuccessful) will be sent:

  • Round 1, by late May
  • Round 2, by early October

Note: Funds are not guaranteed and are distributed on the basis of academic merit. Exchange students will be given preference.

Melbourne Global Financial Assistance

All undergraduate students, including honours students, and postgraduate coursework students undertaking a study abroad, which is approved for credit, may also apply for Melbourne Global Financial Assistance, which is a grant of up to a maximum of $2,000.

This assistance is awarded on the basis of financial need, where the receipt of benefits, scholarships, destination, length of study and parental assistance are all taken into considersation. Financial Assistance applications are available from the link below and are processed after the Melbourne Global Scholarship awards have been made.

Applications are due by the following dates:

Round 1 - for travel on or after 1 May and before 1 November apply by 20 May*

Round 2 - for travel on or after 1 November and before 1 May of the following year apply by 20 October*

* Where the date falls on a weekend, applications can be submitted on the following Monday. Late applications cannot be accepted.


It is expected that emails announcing the awarding of the funding will be sent:

  • Round 1, by mid-June
  • Round 2, by mid-November

Melbourne Global Scholarships in Language Study

Students currently enrolled in a modern language subject as part of their undergraduate degree or diploma may be eligible for a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study. The amount awarded usually ranges from $1,000 to $6,000. To be eligible, students must:

  • have completed at least 100 points of modern language study at tertiary level
  • be currently enrolled in modern language studies
  • be intending to undertake study in this language overseas.

Students wishing to apply for a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study should collect an application form from Student Centres or download it by clicking this link:

The completed application must be submitted to the Student Centre of the applicant by the following dates:

Round 1 - for travel on or after 1 May and before 1 November apply by 31 March*

Round 2 - for travel on or after 1 November and before 1 May in the following year apply by 31 August*

Study Abroad students who are unsuccessful in obtaining a Melbourne Global Scholarship in Language Study will be automatically considered for a Melbourne Global Scholarship if they are approved to receive credit for their studies abroad. There will be no need to lodge a separate application. Students who do receive the Language Study Scholarship will be ineligible for a Melbourne Global Scholarship.
