Melbourne Global Mobility For Outgoing Students

Planning Study Abroad

'Study Abroad' is the term given to overseas study that students can take outside the Melbourne Global Mobility Exchange Program. The basic steps involved to travel as a Study Abroad student are:

1. Choose an institution

Study Abroad students go to institutions which are not University of Melbourne exchange partners. Seek academic assistance in choosing an appropriate institution and consult Melbourne Global Mobility resources such as the Resource Room in the Old Geology building (upstairs) and the helpful links & addresses page of this website for assistance.

2. Seek faculty approval

Your Faculty advisor will provide advice about going on Study Abroad. Certain faculties have eligibility criteria for considering any requests for Study Abroad credit.
You should supply your Faculty advisor with descriptions of the subjects you hope to take at your study abroad institution, including contact hours, methods of assessment and a description of the topics covered. Seek approval in writing to take these chosen subjects. You are advised to get approvals for a large number of alternative subjects should your first choices become unavailable.
Study Abroad students, unlike exchange students, are not compelled to study a full load while overseas. In some cases, however, completing a full-time load is an important prerequisite to obtaining a student visa.
Credit for study abroad is granted upon presenting an original academic transcript from your study abroad institution. Also be prepared to bring back your overseas work to be reassessed at the University of Melbourne, should this be deemed necessary.

Note: Students seeking credit for Chinese language studies should see more information from the Chinese Language Credit policy webpage.

3. Apply for a place

If your Faculty advisor approves your study plans, apply directly to the host institution for entry. Some institutions may have an online application process, if not, you will have to request the appropriate forms be sent to you.

Remember

  • to apply by the host institution due date for applications
  • to provide all the documentation requested, such as transcripts, academic references
  • you may have to prove that you have sufficient funds to support you while living there
  • you will probably have to pay international student fees to this institution

Note: The terms used to describe study abroad differ around the world. The following are common: 'free-mover', 'non-degree student', 'short-term student', 'visiting student', but there will invariably be others.

4. Apply for funding

Consider applying for a Melbourne Global Mobility Scholarship, a Melbourne Global Mobility Scholarship in Language Study or one of the many scholarships available from other bodies. You can apply for most scholarships without being formally accepted by the study abroad institution.

For more information about possible scholarships see:

5. Apply to go on 'Leave of Absence'

If your application to study at the overseas institution is accepted, ask your Faculty advisor to put you on 'leave of absence' for the time you will be overseas.

6. Pre-departure arrangements

Remember to arrange a flight, visa, insurance and accommodation at or near your host institution. You are also welcome to attend the Pre-departure Session that Melbourne Global Mobility organises for exchange students at the end of the semester preceeding their exchange. Please register your name with Melbourne Global Mobility if you wish to attend.
