Course Planning & Re-enrolment

This page is designed for students currently on exchange. If you are about to go on exchange, click here.

Re-enrolment for 2009

Re-enrolment runs from Monday, 20 October to Friday, 21 November in 2008. If you do not re-enrol in this period you will receive a $250 Late Re-enrolment Fee. If you have not re-enrolled for 2009 by Friday 5 December 2008 your enrolment will be cancelled.

Note that cancellation will mean that you will need to apply for re-admission into your course as a new student, but will be considered on the basis of academic merit and the availability of places. If you are re-accepted into the course you will be charged fees and/or student contributions at the 2009 rate. You will also be charged the $250 Late Re-enrolment Fee. If you are an international student whose enrolment is cancelled, your Australian visa will also be cancelled.

There are three (3) steps to re-enrolment:

  1. indicating your interest in student organisations;
  2. accepting the terms and conditions of re-enrolment; and
  3. selecting your subjects (this requirement does not apply to all courses).

When re-enrolling, make sure you keep the receipt number that is issued when you complete each step. If you don't have a receipt number then you HAVE NOT completed the step. Please try again. If you are having difficulties, email your Faculty Exchange Adviser.

You re-enrol via the Home tab in the Student Portal (http://portal.unimelb.edu.au) .

Who Should Re-enrol?

You must re-enrol if you are currently away on exchange and will be...

...returning to Melbourne for study in 2009.
Complete your re-enrolment as usual for the 2009 academic year, that is semester 1 and 2;

...extending your exchange to include semester 1, 2009.
If you are hoping to extend your exchange but it is yet to be approved:

  1. re-enrol for the 2009 academic year as if you were returning to Melbourne; and
  2. once approved notify your Faculty Exchange Advisor by email that your semester 1 enrolment needs to reflect the fact that you will still be on exchange.

...still on exchange in semester 1, 2009, but will return to Melbourne for study in semester 2, 2009.
If you are still on exchange in semester 1 and returning to Melbourne in semester 2:
  1. notify your Faculty Exchange Adviser by email that your semester 1enrolment needs to reflect the fact that you will still be on exchange; and
  2. re-enrol for semester 2.

...travelling or otherwise engaged in semester 1, 2009, but will return to Melbourne for study in semester 2.
If your exchange is completed at the end of the year, but you do not plan to return to study until semester 2, 2009:

  1. re-enrol for the entire year; and
  2. notify your Faculty Exchange Advisor that you would like to be on leave of absence for semester 1 and your enrolment for that semester altered. You must ensure that your leave of absence is approved.

Re-enrolment Procedure for 2009

This revised process is designed to facilitate your re-enrolment and to give you extra time to pay your fees.
After completing the enrolment steps, you will be confirmed if you:

Following confirmation, a fee invoice will be sent to you in January, 2009. If you have not received one by the 31 January, you can download one from the Fees Section of the Admin tab on the Student Portal (http://portal.unimelb.edu.au).

Follow these easy steps to re-enrol:

  1. go to the Home tab in the Student Portal (http://portal.unimelb.edu.au);
  2. click on the Re-enrolment button on the right hand side of the screen;
  3. the first screen will ask you to indicate your interest in a Student Organisation. You must submit this to receive a receipt number even if you don't wish to be part of any organisation;
  4. the next screen will list the terms and conditions of re-enrolment and you will be asked to accept those by presssing the submit button;
  5. you will then be asked to select your subjects but this does not apply to all courses, if you have a choice in what subjects you want to do,comlete subject selection according to the instructions received from your faculty;
  6. if you have no choice in what subjects you do, your faculty may enter the correct subjects for your re-enrolment in 2009, otherwise they will advise you as to which subjects to select;
  7. if you are doing subjects on exchange that are pre-requisites for subjects you want to do when you get back, it will be assumed that you have passed them until your results have been received from the partner institution;
  8. you must view your subject selection before you can submit. You will receive a receipt number if this is done correctly;
  9. close the screen and go back to the Re-enolment link on the Student Portal; and
  10. you should receive a receipt number when you complete each step, if you don't have a receipt number then you HAVE NOT completed the step and you should try again. If you are having difficulties, email your Faculty Exchange Adviser.

Note:

  1. It is assumed you are returning to study at the University of Melbourne in 2009 and will be expected to re-enrol, unless you indicate otherwise. If you are not returning, you must:
    • apply to your faculty to take Leave of Absence;
    • or submit a notice of discontinuation of enrolment to your faculty, by 21 November, 2008.
  2. Please note that the fee invoice can be sent to, and paid from anywhere in the world. Alternatively, a statement of liability can be downloaded from the Student Portal web site and used to pay fees. A late fee will apply to all mandatory fees that aren't received in full by the due date.

Failure to complete these steps may result in the cancellation of your enrolment.

If your enrolment is cancelled and you subsequently wish to resume study in 2009, you must apply in writing to your faculty, who will consider your application on the basis of academic merit and depending on their capacity to take additional students. If such an application is approved, you will be required to pay a failure to Late Re-enrolment fee of $250 and will be re-admitted to the course at the new 2009 student contribution or tuition fee rate. Re-admission will take place in January.
