Late applications are now being accepted for the Global Issues Program. Students can choose from a range of online and campus-based subjects offered by Universitas 21 partners. Coming up soon are the following online subjects:
- Asia, the Pacific & the West in History - offered by the University of Melbourne from 15 August 2008 to 2 November 2008;
- Global Citizenship - offered by the University of British Columbia twice annually from 2 September 2008 to 15 December 2008 and 5 January 2009 to 20 April 2009;
- Global Citizenship - Global Issues - offered by the University of Nottingham from 25 September 2008 to 2 December 2008;
- Human Security in the Global Context - offered by the University of Hong Kong from 12 January 2009 to 27 April 2009.

After a call for staff and student nominations in February, selections have been made for the annual U21 Summer School, and the U21 Undergraduate Research Conference. Both events are important opportunities for undergraduate Melbourne students to actively participate in the U21 international community. From Burma to Japan, Manchuria to Thailand, the Cook Islands to Cambodia and Tibet... The Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne is once again offering the exciting online subject 'Asia, the Pacific and the West in History', as part of the Global Issues Program. Taught during semester two (August-November) by Dr Justin Tighe, the course has received positive feedback from students in previous years. Melbourne students may seek enrolment in this course via their Student Centre and students from U21 partners may contact the U21 International Programs Coordinator on jessiem@unimelb.edu.au.

The UREKA international summer program is a unique opportunity for undergraduate students to participate in pioneering research in the area of gene expression & protein function. Such research promises to provide a molecular understanding of human diseases that are characterised by abnormal gene expression. The program is under-pinned by state-of-the-art technologies available on site at UCD. Research topics include cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, meiosis and immunology.
A weekly stipend will be paid to each student, campus housing will be provided and a contribution to travel expenses will be available for international students. Scientific activities, tours and social events will also be organised. The application deadline is 14 March 2008.

Five full-fee scholarships will be offered to students and junior researchers in Universitas 21 partner institutions. In order to be considered for a scholarship, candidates should submit a short paper (maximum 1,500 words) on the following question: “From transplantation to transformation? Assess the contribution of migration to Irish society.” Further details on the Summer School are on the UCD website at www.ucd.ie/sbbs/news/News_Eureka.htm and applications and enquiries about the UCD International Summer School should be addressed to Dr Brian Jackson, Director of the Global Irish Institute (brian.jackson@ucd.ie). Universitas 21 institution the University of Birmingham is hosting a Postgraduate Research Conference 20-25 July 2008 on the theme of water, and the University of Melbourne will offer up to 5 awards of $3000 each to Melbourne students to attend. The conference is open to all postgraduate research students with an interest in some aspect of water. The deadline for applications to attend is Saturday 1 March. To be eligible for the UoM's $3000 award, students must be:
* offered a place at the Conference, and
* at the time of the Conference, have confirmed enrolment in a UoM research higher degree and have been enrolled for at least eight months full time or equivalent.
Students who have already received funds for travel related to their research (eg a Melbourne Abroad Travelling Scholarship) are still eligible to apply.

The Faculty of Law at the University of Melbourne is offering an exciting new online subject as part of the GIP. 'Globalisation and the Law', taught by senior academics Dr Jennifer Beard and Associate Professor Sundhya Pahuja, will run for the first time from March to June 2008.

The University of British Columbia is offering an exciting online course as part of the GIP. Called 'Perspectives on
Global Citizenship', it is the core module for the GIP and will explore themes relating to global citizenship through debate, discussion
and critical analysis.
